History of the house and about us

The house is originally called Skararp Södergård and locally known as Arons house and we can date back the house till 1843. The house is related to the big farm in Skararp owned by the family Jansson.

Some years before 1843, the grandfather of Åke Jansson required redevelopment of the areas of the land in Skararp (skifte af Jorden). This was rather unpopular. All the houses were gathered close to each other as you see it today if you walk around the roads of the big farm. After 2 years the reform was finished and each parcel had the quality and value of the land defined.

Arons house was originally built in Hökhult and was moved to Skararp around 1843, so the house could be even 100 years older than that. It is a very solid wooden house built after old Swedish traditions and in each bedroom, there is still trace of the wood fires that each room had at that time.

In 1968 Åke Jansson sold the house to a Danish guy (for 18.000 SEK) and since then the house has been on Danish hands.

In 1994 our family bought the house (Hilmar Sørensen & Jonna Hejgaard) and has been widely used by the family. In the first years there was no bathroom/toilet in the house. After some years a dry closet was installed and later on the bathroom with a real toilet and shower. That was a big improvement!! Hilmar and Jonna have kept and maintained the house very nicely and always with respect to the old traditions.

In 2017 it was time for a generation shift and today Hanne Hejgaard & Jacques Valckenaere has restored the house with new kitchen, electricity, new windows, and a lot of painting. We have consulted some Swedish experts on how to insulate and build up the walls in the original style. We have done everything ourselves and took some time, but the confinement/lockdown in 2020 gave us an opportunity to spend some months in Skararp.

We had (unfortunately) to change the old Swedish wood fire to a new one. It was simply too expensive to restore the old one and the new wood fire makes it possible to quickly warm up the house and we enjoy looking at the fire through the glass too.

Hanne is Danish and Jacques is Belgian and we live in Luxembourg. We love to stay in the house, but cannot use it all the time. Our 4 children (Frederik, Benedicte, Niels & Nasstasya) love to stay in the house too but are also limited in time to go here. Hence, we decided to open up the house for guests for some months every year and hope you will enjoy it as much as we do.
